Never Thought I’d do the Keto Diet! The Secrets I’ve Learned!

Don’t you just feel like rolling your eyes back when someone starts talking about diets. So not being one for promoting diets or jumping on fads, in late 2019 I decided to give Keto a crack. Now in my 50th year, I have found that stubborn belly fat was becoming a little hard to shift, so I decided to do the Ketogenic.  As you get older, you learn to never say never, as I was pretty surprised saying yes to a diet.

In principal the Keto Diet is a high fat, moderate protein and low carbohydrate diet. The reason I looked at keto was because what I was doing wasn’t working. I was eating a whole lot of grains and these “So-Called Wholefoods” were ending up on my belly. I was drowning in carbs especially grains. What I found that these grains were spiking my insulin

What surprised me was how easy it was to transition from a diet significantly made up of grains to one that is virtually nil. So all I had to do was kick the grains and increase my good fats and make sure that I had enough protein and low carb veggies (ie no sweet potato, pumpkin, and potato).  It was fascinating to see how quickly the weight around my middle started shifting and I also noticed body was looking stronger too.

Just as Intriguing I wasn’t doing that much more exercise and yet the keto diet was working. OMG, I wish had done this so much sooner. Grains? Yep, grains where contributing to my abdominal fat and boy did I love grains. (We’ll talk about grains in more detail another time). For now, sticking to a low carb no grain program was working.

I had reached a point that I noticed I had plateaued, so began the search for more answers. And what I am about to tell is you is a “DOH” kind of moment. After doing more research what I found that the grains/carbs helped my body to retain water.

During the diet my urine started to become a darker colour, which is typically a sign of dehydration. Yet, I was drinking water! From the research I found that the no grains / keto diet I was doing was contributing to me losing water and fast. When you burn fat, the body needs a lot more water, requiring 2.5litres minimum per day. Keeping an eye on water intake is essential if you’re doing a keto diet!  So I started to up the water. S

The signs of dehydration on a keto diet may appear as dizziness, flu-like, fatigue, dark urine and nausea.

If you are feeling horrible on a keto diet it could that you need more salts.  Salt is as critical as water. If you are losing water, you’re also losing salts (minerals). On a restricted keto diet, you may not be consuming enough salt and this can have an impact on how you feel.  According to Australian Government daily salt requirements are approximately 2000mg per day. So you could need more if you’re exercising and sweating losing electrolyte salts.

One trick is to add lake salt or minerals into your water whilst on a keto diet. Minerals like magnesium and potassium can also be affected. You may need to add a broad-spectrum mineral supplement as another consideration. It’s easy to get distracted when it comes to calculating water intake so find a 600ml-1000ml bottle so you can work out how much you have consumed each day. Just add minerals or salts to the bottle water and now you can calculate salts and water consumption.

How much do you love coffee, enough to buy a poopuccino?

The world loves coffee and with its insatiable appetite for the best brew, the poop from the Kopi Lukwak or Civet is highly sort after. At $30 a cup it’s not your everyday brew.

What makes this coffee special is how it’s made. The Civet consumes coffee cherries as part of its diet and excretes partially digested enzymatically rich coffee cherries. This is said to give the coffee a richer smoother flavor. At $700 per kilogram US it’s definitely one of the world’s most expensive blends which for the coffee aficionado could just be the Holy Grail.

Coffee or not it’s still poop right?

The down side to the coffee poop market is the cute little fury guys doing all the pooping. I am sure there are some humans who would make a fortune if they could get paid to poop for a living. The Civet however is not so fortunate being kept in cages and force fed coffee cherries to encourage their $700/kg poopsicles.

Other than a supposed better flavour I can’t tell you if there are any nutritional benefits.

Well for now, I am going to stick with poop free, fair trade coffee.

The Paleo Debate Rages On!

Is the Paleo Way of eating really the best approach for your health? As the debate rages on, I am going to add my 2 cents, well I am probably going to give you $10 bucks worth actually. So hang in there as we all aboard the paleo train.

Why chuck my 2 cents into the ring, well because I have philosophy that’s opposed to sticking to a diet regime of any type. Please don’t get me wrong I am not about to suggest you be complacent about foods, it’s more about food quality and foods that work for you!

In recent episodes of Channel 7’s Sunday Night show that follows Mike Willesee and Pete Evans on the paleo journey. After 10 weeks with the help of Pete Evans, Mike Willesee has remarkably achieved great results while following the paleo diet, which is awesome achievement on Mike’s part.

So Paleo or not to Paleo, so let’s look at some factors to consider:

  • Digestive Health – this means exactly that! Is your digestive system functioning as well as it can to handle breaking down fats / proteins? Alternatively are you producing enough digestive enzymes, and is the gut lining health to absorb nutrients.
  • Ethnicity – some foods may not suit your ethnic origin
  • Immune System – when jumping on a fad diet, you may encounter foods that you have never eaten before and if you have a history of food allergies, it’s always best to start slowly.
  • Your current state of health – it’s always advisable to check with your Naturopath or health professional to see if this is suitable for you.

I really do like a lot of aspects of the paleo diet, but are there considerations that need to be considered before making the switch.

  • Have you have an allergy test done?
  • Do you suffer with indigestion or reflux?
  • Are your bowls moving properly or do suffer with IBS?
  • Are you under-weight or overweight?

Lastly I don’t believe in diets, I believe in REAL WHOLE FOODS! I much prefer to choose foods on the following basis:

  • The Quality of the food ie wholefoods vs processed
  • The Origin of the food (local Vs Imported)
  • The suitability to my body
  • How it was prepared (ie Microwaved Vs Steamed, Blanched ect)
  • Toxicity of the Food (Organic Vs Sprayed)

The question I want you to ponder is this diet really for me?

Heavy Metal Detoxification

OMG You Won’t Believe What Came Out of Me!

It was the biggest SHOCK Ever, considering I live a very healthy life, I don’t drink, I don’t Smoke, and rarely eat processed foods. A friend of mine suggested I do a detox foot bath. Now I have to tell you that I thought these foot bath detox things were just a load of phooehy.

You just wait and see the photo I took, and just check out the toxic crap that came out of my body (check out the photo below). What really hit the nail on the head for me was the smell. I could smell a putrid metallic aroma coming from the detox bath and it was nasty.

What does spark my curiosity is if I am living a clean eating healthy life, and this is what came out of me. What are the rest of you going to be like! I couldn’t believe the science experiment that was growing in the water, it was simply unbelievable.

I have always been somewhat skeptical of these footbath doodads, and speaking to my friends about their technology I have to say I am impressed and a little freaked out. They have sent previous samples off to the lab for analysis to see what was actually in the black soup. The lab results were to say the least terrifying! Can you imagine what may be hidden beneath the surface after a life time of poor habits! It really is quite concerning.

The reality is that with continued industrialization, environmental toxicity is only going to continue to get worse. My clients will often ask “Where Did This Come From”. The truth I feel it’s practically everywhere we turn. Just look around your home, cosmetics, personal care products, laundry products, garden sprays, fertilizers, carpet sprays, insect sprays and also paints and other hardware products.

Being proactive in your choices is now a must. What products you consume may impact your health.

Unlocking Autism

Autism was unheard of when I was growing up in the 70’s, for that matter I don’t even recall seeing any kids with Asthma either. More recently we now we see epidemic proportions of kids with varying degrees of ADHD, Asperger’s and Autism.

The Question Is Why?

I feel that the answer lies in the world that we have created for ourselves. Just take a walk down memory lane and think back to your own childhood. Our world was significantly different in many ways – Social and Political Landscapes, Chemical/Environmental Landscapes, the Food Supply Chain and Food Quality, Digital Technologies, Electromagnetic Smog, as well as Vaccination Programs. The bottom line is that the human body is dealing with so much more than it has than any other time in history.

Just think about how the combined impact of the factors listed above may impact human health. The stats are quite clear we have rising levels of almost every type of health condition in western countries. Simply put it means that we have overwhelmingly increased levels of stressors in all areas of life.

A stressor can be defined as:

Zucchini Tuna Pasta Recipe

Tools: Mortar & Pestle, Spiralizer

Ingredients: 1 Large Zucchini, 2-3 Average Size Chilli’s, 1 Limes Juice, Coriander, Sea Salt, 100gr of Tuna and Olive Oil

Method: Place Chilli’s into Mortar and Pestle and pulverise, add salt as desired and olive oil and mush together. Allow Oil to infuse for 10-15minutes then pour over tuna and allow to rest. Using a spiralizer, turn zucchini into spaghetti.

Place Zucchini and Tuna together, the adding the limes juice and coriander last. Mix through and serve. Enjoy!
